Why silence the ego?

A few days ago, I read an email from Carol, who in response to “Here and now” she asked me:

"Why is it necessary to silence the ego if it is something that makes us value ourselves? I see it as a mechanism that protects me when they want to take advantage of me. I would like to know your opinion.

Carol’s question made me reflect deeply, because although I do not agree 100% with her perspective, I agree that, directly or indirectly, the ego has certain implications in the way we relate to others.

First of all, I must begin by explaining that, to me, ego is like having a blindfold that prevents us from seeing the inherent beauty of our being and the world around us.

It constantly distracts us, taking us away from the present and prevents us from experiencing life in its totality.

When we manage to let go of the ego, even for an instant, we discover a different reality, a state of pure consciousness, where each moment becomes unique.

Living without the ego does not mean losing our identity, but rather finding a more authentic and fulfilling way of existing.

It is a state of openness and trust in life itself, where well-being and joy do not depend on external conditions, but arise naturally from within.

This state of “egolessness” allows us to experience life in all its richness and complexity. We accept both moments of joy and sadness, moments of calm and agitation, recognizing that they are all an integral part of our human experience.

In this total acceptance, we find a peace and fulfillment that transcends the changing circumstances of life.

So, going back to Carol’s question, I must say that egolessness, (again) for me, is a state of mind that allows us to trust fully in the goodness of the world.

Does trusting in the goodness of the world mean, as Carol says, exposing ourselves to being hurt?

Maybe, it’s a valid opinion…

However, in that state of unconditional well-being that living without ego implies, joy and confidence permeate every situation we experience.

Perhaps my answer to Carol is that, living without ego does not guarantee that no one will hurt you or take advantage of you, however, it will make you immune to the suffering derived from that experience.

I apologize in advance for the long writing, and I open the debate to read your opinion and reflection on the subject.

Thanks Carol for the question, and to everyone who made it this far. ❤️
