Adjust the sails

On Friday, while visiting an advertising agency, I came across the following quote (from William Arthur Ward).

“The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist hopes it will change; the realist trims the sails.”

I hadn’t heard/read it before, but I thought it was a good analogy and wanted to share it with you.

The pessimist, no matter what happens, will always complain, lament his fate and believe that there is nothing he can do to change the situation. The pessimist’s negative mentality limits him and prevents him from seeking solutions to the challenges he faces.

The optimist, on the other hand, is the opposite, maintaining hope and a positive attitude no matter what happens. Trust that things will get better and that the difficulties are temporary. However, the optimist often makes the mistake of thinking that things will get better without doing anything about it. When it doesn’t happen, he experiences disappointment and despair.

Finally we have the realist (and I would add, coherent), who takes a more balanced approach to life’s challenges. He is aware of what is happening and instead of lamenting or waiting for things to magically change, he takes a proactive approach to finding solutions to the challenges he faces.

The pragmatic approach of the realist/coherent gives you enough flexibility to adapt to whatever each situation requires and empowers you to overcome any obstacles you encounter.

👇 Tip of the Day 👇

In life, challenges (and strong winds) will always be present, adopting a realistic but also coherent attitude will allow you to face them with greater strength, determination and resilience.

Adjusting our sails and taking effective action empowers us to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals. Through self-awareness and constant practice, we can develop an attitude that helps us embrace life with hope and confidence.

To cultivate a realistic and consistent attitude towards challenges, I recommend the following:

a) Self-awareness: Recognize your pessimistic or optimistic tendencies and be aware of how they affect you in different situations.

b) Acceptance: Accept the circumstances as they are, without denying the difficulties but also recognizing that there are opportunities for change.

c) Focus on the present: Identify how what is happening alters your thoughts and emotions and how what you think aligns with “reality.” Concentrate and focus your energy on what you can do right now to improve the situation.

d) Develop problem-solving skills: Learn to identify solutions and take concrete actions to overcome challenges, ensuring that these solutions are aligned with your thoughts, values and emotions.

e) Practice gratitude: Recognize that even what may not seem so at first glance, can teach you a lesson and therefore something positive. Cultivate a mindset of gratitude.
