There are weeks when, despite all the responsibilities, I find myself immersed in a maelstrom of curiosity, research and reading.
Last week, it was one of those, and the following newsletter is probably the longest (in terms of characters) that I have written in these 33 editions.
I hope some of the highlights I share below will make you think as much as they did me, and if you don’t have much time to read, I recommend you look at the titles and focus on the ones that resonate with you the most.
Let’s get started!
Progress is the consequence of making the right decisions at the right time.
Go at your own pace and don’t worry so much about what others are doing. Avoid comparisons, life is not a race.
H1: Catch the goldfish
A few weeks ago I wrote about this book by David Lynch and since it’s been so many years since I first read it, I wanted to refresh my notes.
Below, I’ll share with you what struck me most about this fascinating book in which Lynch uses the metaphor of fishing to explain the creative process and the search for great ideas.
Ideas are like fish
“Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in shallow water. But if you want to catch a big goldfish, you have to go into deeper water.”
In other words:
- Great ideas require commitment and effort.
- We must be willing to venture into the unknown.
- Superficiality only brings us superficial ideas
The power of desire
Lynch explains that desire is the bait that attracts the fish (ideas):
- Desire acts as a motivating force
- Maintains our focus
- Naturally attracts ideas that are aligned with our purpose.
Meditation as a tool
Lynch emphasizes the importance of transcendental meditation for:
- Accessing the unified (quantum) field of creativity
- Expanding awareness
- Connect with deeper and more meaningful ideas
Catching several fish
Lynch reveals something fascinating about how ideas connect with each other:
- An initial idea attracts other related ideas
- Fragments are accumulating organically
- The whole emerges naturally from the process
As he explains in the book, “when you catch a fish you like, even if it’s small, that fish will lead you to another fish, and they’ll all get hooked on the first one.”
Intuition as a guide
Lynch highlights the crucial role of intuition in the creative process:
- It is the perfect union between emotion and intellect.
- It allows us to see solutions beyond logical reasoning.
- Acts as a compass in deep waters
Fidelity to the Idea
One of the most powerful principles Lynch shares is, “If you stay true to the idea, it actually tells you everything you need to know.”
This involves:
- Trust in the creative process
- Allowing the idea to develop naturally
- Maintain the integrity of the original vision
Daily practice
Lynch emphasizes the importance of:
- Creating a space for creativity
- Develop a “fishing” routine
- Always be ready to capture ideas
The above lines summarize the book, but I also want to share with you some of the ideas that I implemented after reading the book for the first time:
A “diary of ideas”:
- For years now I have always had something to write down
- I immediately capture any idea that comes up
- I do not judge the ideas at the moment of capturing them.
My creative routine:
- My specific times for “fishing” are in the morning, before I start work, and in the evening, just before I go to bed.
- Adapt a space conducive to creativity (in my case, my desk).
- Minimize distractions during these times.
To deepen the practice:
These things are highlighted by David in the book, although in my case, I had already integrated them into my daily practice before:
- Meditate regularly
- Cultivating inner silence
- Developing observation skills
What I enjoyed most about re-reading this book is the simple way in which Lynch demystifies the creative process without taking away its magic.
However, the teaching that this work leaves us with transcends creativity. David goes much further:
For Lynch, life itself is a creative process and every decision is an act of creation.
Every experience can be a source of inspiration and every challenge is an opportunity to catch new ideas.
David also stresses the importance of balance:
- Between discipline and freedom
- Between structure and fluidity
- Between depth and simplicity
“Catch the Goldfish” is not just a book about creativity; it is an invitation to: live more deeply, create consciously and explore courageously.
As Lynch recommends, “Grow in happiness and intuition, experience the joy of doing and in this peaceful way you will shine.”
In closing, I would like to share a personal reflection: each of us has an inner ocean of creative possibilities.
The question is not whether there are goldfish waiting to be discovered, but whether we are willing to go into the depths to find them.

H2: Dreams and transrational knowledge
This week I came across an interesting article in Psychology Today that explores an unconventional dimension of our dreams: their ability to access knowledge beyond the rational.
The article delves into the influence of dreams on some of the most important discoveries in history:
- Otto Loewi discovered neurotransmitters through a dream.
- Thomas Edison used the hypnagogic state for his inventions.
- George Washington Carver revolutionized agriculture through dreamlike inspiration.
As Otto Loewi said after his Nobel Prize-winning discovery,“In dreams often comes the answer that the conscious mind cannot find.”
I think I have mentioned this before, but it never ceases to amaze me how modern science continues to bring us closer to the ancient wisdom, which for thousands of years has considered that the dream world has a great impact on what we experience on the physical plane.
One practice I can recommend that I have used for years is to keep a dream journal.
Take notes on each of your dreams, even the ones that don’t seem to make much sense, because at some point those notes will serve as a source of creativity, help you solve problems, or simply allow you to see things from a different perspective.
I also want to invite you to reflect: How many times have you dismissed the wisdom of your dreams as “just dreams”? What solutions and answers could you find if you paid more attention to this transrational knowledge?
Personal development does not only imply strengthening our rational capacities, it is also important to be open to alternative forms of knowledge and to integrate different levels of consciousness in this process of growth.
Dreams are a creative activity, the question is: are you taking advantage of their potential in your life?
H3: Aristotle, the most important man in our history?
Earlier this week, I came across a BBC piece highlighting Aristotle as the most important man in our history.
And as I read through the work, I found myself deeply fascinated by Aristotle’s great impact on human civilization.
It is not easy to say that a single man has had such a great impact as to be considered the most important in our history.
But if we analyze the way Aristotle influenced the development of culture, our way of thinking, reasoning and understanding the world, it makes sense to consider him as one of the most important men in our history.
Aristotle’s great impact can be divided into three fundamental dimensions:
- Revolution of thought:
– He was the pioneer of logic.
– Developed the syllogism as a reasoning tool.
– Established the foundations of structured argumentation
– Defined the principles of logical deduction
- Scientific method:
– Introduced systematic observation
– Established the importance of classification
– Developed methods of analysis and synthesis - Social and philosophical legacy:
– Developed the theory of virtue
– Defined the concept of the “golden mean”.
– Developed the principles of happiness and well-being
Politics and society:
– Developed theories on government and justice
– He was a pioneer in the analysis of political systems.
– He developed one of the first concepts of citizenship and community.
- Impact on the sciences:Biology and zoology:
– Classified more than 540 animal species
– Performed the first documented dissections
– Established principles of taxonomy
Physics and astronomy:– Developed theories on motion and causality.
– Studied the nature of time and space
– He was a pioneer in astronomical observations.
When you put into perspective all that Aristotle contributed to our development, I think we can all agree that, indeed, beyond being the greatest of the Greek philosophers, he is one of the most important philosophers/thinkers in history.
In addition to what is listed above, we can still find the influence of Aristotle in the modern world:
In education:
- Their methods of categorization and analysis are the basis of our educational systems.
- Its focus on critical thinking remains fundamental
- His pedagogical principles continue to influence teaching.
In science:
- Its systematic research method is the basis of the scientific method.
- Its classification principles are still relevant
- His emphasis on empirical observation remains in force
In Philosophy and Ethics:
- His theories on virtue influence modern ethics
- His concepts of justice impact today’s law
- His ideas on happiness continue to be debated
As is evident, Aristotle’s thoughts and theories have transcended time and remain relevant to our contemporary challenges.

H4: Consciousness begins before the first recollection
Another piece of research I read about this week explores one of the most intriguing questions about human nature: when does consciousness emerge in babies?
According to this study:
- Consciousness could emerge before birth
- Babies show signs of self-awareness from an early age
- The infant brain is more complex than we thought
Tim Bayne of the Monash University research team explains that the research aims to clarify when we begin to perceive consciousness, when that stream of consciousness emerges, if I can’t remember.
What strikes me most about this research is how it makes us rethink the nature of consciousness and our own experience on this physical plane, since, according to the study:
- Consciousness may precede memory
- Our first conscious experiences are inaccessible
The study could also shed light on how much of our early conscious experience shapes our adulthood and what impact those early moments of awareness have on our later development.
Understanding these fundamental aspects of our nature is not just a simple learning process, it is an invitation to marvel at the mystery of our own existence.
H5: Inkhatazo
The reference to the cosmos that I made in the title of this week’s newsletter is related to the last 2 highlights.
First, earlier this week I read about an astronomical discovery that highlights how small we are in the vast universe.
The MeerKAT telescope in South Africa has discovered a giant galaxy that has been dubbed “Inkathazo” (“problem” in isiXhosa and isiZulu).
The most striking aspect of Inkathazo is, without a doubt, its magnitude:
– Extends 3.3 million light years
– It is 32 times larger than our Milky Way galaxy
– Its plasma jets challenge our understanding of physics
– It is located in the center of a cluster of galaxies.
According to Dr. Jacinta Delhaize: “Science must always be willing to be questioned.Science must always be willing to be questioned.“…
And this discovery forces us to rethink many of our theories about giant galaxies.
As I said at the beginning of these lines, this discovery is a good reminder that the universe is much more vast and complex than we imagine.
And beyond expanding our knowledge of the universe, it also invites us to expand our own awareness and perspective on what is possible.
H6: Gravitational communication: When the future surpasses science fiction
Yesterday, Saturday, I read in Science Alert about research that could revolutionize the way we communicate through the cosmos.
Gravitational waves, a phenomenon that warps space and time, are emerging as a possible solution to one of the greatest challenges of space exploration: communication over long distances.
Most interestingly, this technology could overcome the fundamental limitations of our current communications:
– Does not weaken with distance
– Immune to atmospheric interference
– Crosses physical obstacles
– Maintains signal quality in extreme environments
According to Houtianfu Wang, part of the research team:
“Gravitational waves can maintain consistent signal quality over immense distances, making them suitable for missions beyond the solar system.“
Reading this, I was really shocked to realize that what was once considered science fiction is getting closer and closer to becoming reality.
A good reminder that the limits of what is possible are much wider than we think, and that as technology advances, they expand exponentially.
